Microwave How

Welcome to Microwave How!

Microwaves have been a necessity in any kitchen, regardless of whether it's in a home or restaurant. Some food cooks great in microwaves, and other food tastes absolutely horrible when cooked in microwaves. At Microwave How you will find out how to make the best food taste even better when cooked in a microwave.

Have you ever had a microwave literally make your food explode? I know I have, along with my friends. Throwing last nights lasagna tends to explose violently, leaving tomatoe paste, cheese, and sausage all over the interior of the microwave. Who wants to have to clean up the microwave after they zap their 'quick and easy' dinner? No one.

These are just a few of the subjects that I plan to cover here at Microwave How. Products will also be added that make microwaving a ton easier, such as food covers to protect against those violently explosive foods.

Exploding Food - How Can You Stop It?

We've all had food turn violent when we try and zap it for a quick meal. But why does this happen? Here are 3 of the most common causes for explosive food.

  • Excessive Water Content
  • Large Volume Slices
  • Porous Foods

An Italian favorite, lasagna, has every one of those characteristics. Whenever I zap the lasagna for a quick lunch or dinner, I'll usually end up cleaning the microwave when I pull my food out. Lasagna has a large amout of water, and microwaves specifically target water molecules. Microwaves make these molecules vibrate, generating heat, turning the water to steam. This steam fills the cavities in lasagna that can be sealed off from the atmostphere, effectively producing a steam chamber with an ever-increasing pressure until "POP!", spraying the contents of the Lasagna all over the inside of the microwave.

So how can you prevent this? Sadly, it isn't too easy to stop it all together, and there is no magic solution. However, you can cook the food at a less powerful setting, but that leaves you standing in front of the microwave for several more minutes....effectively eliminating the need for a microwave.

The best solution is a microwaveable cover for your food. The food will still pop and explode, but the cover will keep it from making a mess of your microwave. A cover also keeps more heat in the food, making it cook faster and more thoroughly.
